Shooter misses target, hits child instead

Dafon Canty wanted to shoot Terrell Singleton to retaliate against him for an earlier argument. But prosecutors say that he missed his target and instead struck and wounded a 10-year-old who was on front, screened-in porch of his East Baltimore home.

Canty, 20, was convicted by a Circuit Court jury on Friday and is scheduled to be sentenced March 13. He faces life plus 86 years in prison.

The Baltimore State's Attorney's Office said that Canty opened fire on Singleton in the evening of Aug. 19, 2010, while the intended target was sitting on the front steps of a home in the 1100 block of North Lakewood Ave.

Singleton ran up the stairs as the bullets flew, prosecutors said, and pushed the 10-year-old boy to the ground "in an attempt to protect him." But the boy was hit in the left arm. Singleton was not injured.

Canty, 20, was convicted of attempted first-degree murder, assault and seven handgun violations. Prosecutors said they got a conviction despite two witnesses recanting their testimony.
