A 29-year-old man was arrested Monday night and charged with killing his girlfriend's estranged husband in Southwest Baltimore's Violetville neighborhood, police said.

Police say the victim, 32-year-old Stephan Burley, came to the 3600 block of Benson Ave. at about 6 p.m. where his estranged wife was in a rear yard with her boyfriend, Dennis Freeman.

During a fight, police say Freeman pulled out a folding knife with a locking blade and cut Burley multiple times. Burley, of the 6200 block of Shipview Ave, was taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead at 7:10 p.m.

Freeman, who lived in the 3600 block of Benson Ave., is charged with first- and second-degree murder, assault, and a weapons charge and was being held without bail. An attorney was not listed in court records.

Freeman pleaded guilty to a drug distribution charge in 2005 and received a suspended 14-year sentence. In 2009, he was found to have violated his probation and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Burley had faced a domestic violence case in Baltimore County earlier this year, though records show the case was dismissed when the petitioner failed to appear.
