A judge on Monday acquitted Baltimore Police Lt. Brian Rice of three charges in connection with the arrest and death of Freddie Gray in April 2015.
The charges
Rice was charged with involuntary manslaughter, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. Circuit Judge Barry Williams cleared him of all charges. Williams previously dropped a charge of second-degree assault during the trial, and prosecutors dropped a second misconduct-in-office charge at the start of it.
What lead up to the verdict
Rice, 42, was the highest ranking of six officers charged in the Gray case. He elected a bench trial, leaving his legal fate in the hands of Williams instead of a jury.
Rice was the fourth officer to stand trial in the case. The first trial, of Officer William Porter, ended in a hung jury and mistrial in December. Officers Edward Nero and Caesar Goodson Jr. were acquitted of all charges in bench trials in May and June, respectively.
What's next
Three more trials are scheduled: Officer Garrett Miller on July 27, Porter's retrial on Sept. 6 and Sgt. Alicia White on Oct. 13. All of the officers have pleaded not guilty.
