Church founder sentenced for sexual offenses

A Baltimore church founder was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday, with another 25 years held in suspension, for forcing his girlfriend’s teenage daughter to watch the couple having intercourse and to participate in sexual acts during a two-year period, the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office announced.

Leon Waverly Jones, who founded the Renewed Hope Christian Church on the 700 block of N. Paca St., was convicted in April of eight sexual offense counts. According to prosecutors, Jones, who lives on the 100 block of Sunnydale Way in Reisterstown, forced the victim to engage in oral sex with him between April 2000 and March 2002 and to fondle and kiss her mother.

The elder woman pleaded guilty to sexual child abuse and testified against Jones, 58, during the trial.
