15-year-old underwent multiple surgeries after Annapolis shooting, police say

Annapolis police believe the suspect in an April shooting attempted to fire at both a 15-year-old, who underwent multiple surgeries after being struck, as well as an 18-year-old, who was unharmed, according to charging papers.

The juvenile struck by gunfire on April 12 was suffering from life-threatening injuries caused by a single gunshot wound to his torso, requiring multiple surgeries in the weeks after the shooting, according to charging papers filed against Jayvon Kalik Anderson, a 20-year-old Annapolis resident who was arrested April 29 on attempted murder charges.

Anderson is also charged with attempted murder for allegedly firing at an 18-year-old who arrived that day with the 15-year-old at the Eastport Terrace community, at Frederick Douglass and Medgar Evers streets, police wrote.

The teens are seen on surveillance cameras exiting a white vehicle on Frederick Douglass Street and approaching a group of people, before being chased by a person who was carrying a gun, later identified as Anderson, the charging papers say. He fired and struck the 15-year-old, who fell to the ground, and Anderson continued to chase and fire at the 18-year-old, but did not hit him, police wrote.

Anderson eventually returned to a President Street address, according to charging documents. He was identified as the shooter after police reviewed surveillance photos and recognized him, and an informant, who police believe was present at the scene, recognized the shooter as someone he knew who went by the nickname “Happy.” Police said that is Anderson’s nickname.

Anderson does not have an attorney listed in court records.

He is charged with two counts each of first- and second-degree murder and assault, as well as multiple firearms offenses. He is being held without bail at the Jennifer Road Detention Center and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Anne Arundel County District Court on June 1.
