16-year-old boy from Washington, D.C., identified as gunshot victim found in burned-out car in Laurel, police say

A 16-year-old boy from Washington, D.C., was identified as the gunshot victim found in the back seat of a burned-out car in Laurel, Anne Arundel County Police said Tuesday.

Marquette Knight, who would have turned 17 in November, was identified nearly three months after police found his remains. On Sept. 27, near Brock Bridge Road and Tribeca Trail, law enforcement officials and firefighters responded to a car fire in a field about 100 yards off the road. After extinguishing the flames, officials found a charred body in the back seat. The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.

Detectives initially began looking into the incident as a suspicious death, though an autopsy later that week determined Knight was killed by a gunshot. The case has since been investigated as a homicide.

There have been 16 homicides in Anne Arundel County this year, one of which was in Annapolis.
