12-year-old arrested as Severn neighbor dispute escalates into fire

A 12-year-old Severn boy was arrested Sunday after he allegedly hurled a lighted firework onto his neighbor’s patio during an apparent dispute, an Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman said.

The boy was charged as a juvenile with malicious burning, malicious destruction of property and negligent burning of another’s property, the spokesman said. He was released to his guardian.

Firefighters responded around 8 p.m. to the 1800 block of Blue Jay Court after someone called 911 and said patio furniture was on fire behind a house, said Capt. Russ Davies, department spokesman.

Davies said firefighters put out a small fire that burned outside furniture and extended to a nearby fence.

Investigators from the Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit learned of an ongoing and escalating dispute between neighbors, Davies said.

Davies said the investigation determined that the dispute culminated with the boy retaliating by lighting an illegal firework and tossing it into his neighbor’s yard.

The firework ignited the patio furniture and the flames extended to the adjacent fence, Davies said.
