An Annapolis resident was charged with sexual abuse of a minor after a female student at a Prince George’s County high school where he works reported sexual contact with her, Prince George’s County police said.

The student at Bladensburg High School reported to police Oct. 10 that teacher Thomas Barber, 29, had engaged in sexual contact with her on and off school grounds since the beginning of the school year, police said.

Barber, of the 1600 block of Hawkins Road, admitted to the sexual abuse of the student, police said. This is the only reported case of sexual abuse involving Barber, police said.

Bladensburg High Principal B. Aisha Mahoney wrote a letter to inform the school that Barber, who was a business teacher and assistant junior varsity girls volleyball coach, was arrested on charges of sexual abuse involving a minor.

The letter also stated that he had been terminated from the school “due to the nature of the claims.”

“Any behavior that brings harm to a student will not be tolerated in any way,” Mahoney wrote.
