Frank 'Gus' Vogel, police official

Frank J. "Gus" Vogel, an official of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, died of cancer Wednesday at the University of Maryland Medical Center. The Chase resident was 60.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of Frank John Vogel and Margaret Vogel. He was a graduate of Parkville High School, where he played baseball and football. He earned an associate's degree at Essex Community College.

Mr. Vogel was a statistician for an insurance business before joining the Maryland Transportation Authority Police in 1993. At his death, he was assistant commander in the Commercial Vehicle Safety Division.

Family members said he worked in truck inspections and weighing, and also took on other duties.

Mr. Vogel followed sports and was an animal fancier. He had dogs and enjoyed deep sea fishing on charters off Ocean City. He lived near the Gunpowder and liked to spend time along its shore.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today at the Shrine of St. Alphonsus, 114 W. Saratoga St. at Park Avenue, where he was a member.

In addition to his parents, who reside in Parkville, survivors include his wife of 33 years, the former Loreto "Loy" Sarceno; and a sister, Paula Vogel, also of Parkville.
