Stanley J. Giermek, educator

Stanley J. Giermek, a retired math teacher who had been department chair at the old Cardinal Gibbons High School, died Sunday from heart failure at his Abingdon home. He was 77.

Stanley Joseph Giermek was born and raised in Buffalo, N.Y., where he graduated in 1954 from Bishop Ryan High School.

He earned a bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., and a master's degree from Morgan State University.

From 1961 to 1964, Mr. Giermek taught math at Edmondson High School and Calverton Junior High School. He taught math and was department chair at Cardinal Gibbons from 1964 to 1985.

Mr. Giermek spent the last 15 years of his career teaching math and serving as department chair at Archbishop Curley High School. He retired in 2000.

In addition to his regular teaching, Mr. Giermek was adjunct professor of math in the evening college of at what is now Loyola University Maryland for 15 years. He was director of summer programs at Gibbons and Curley.

The longtime Rosedale resident was a communicant of Annunciation Roman Catholic Church, where he had been a lector for 20 years.

Even though they moved to Abingdon in 1998, Mr. Giermek and his wife of 51 years, the former Mary Barton, became parishioners of St. Clement Mary Hofbauer Roman Catholic Church in Rosedale.

Mr. Giermek, who was an avid photographer and stamp collector, enjoyed listening to classical music and vacationing during summers in Ocean City. He also liked home improvement projects and gardening and was a lifelong Buffalo Bills fan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday at his church, 1220 Chesaco Ave., Rosedale.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Giermek is survived by three sons, Thomas A. Giermek of Ellicott City, Christopher P. Giermek of Catonsville and Stephen J. Giermek of Hampstead; a brother, the Rev. Joachim A. Giermek, Order of Friars Minor, of Ellicott City; a sister, Anne Holmes of Buffalo; and seven grandchildren.
