Fourth Week (June 18 & 20)

This week I continued to work on the unclaimed property database project and also was able to help produce a blog post about chemical incidents in Maryland.

The Maryland chemical incidents project was based off of a national Chemical Safety Board database obtained by Patrick. We created a new database of only Maryland incidents, cleaning up the data and deleting a couple duplicates in the process.

To go along with the database and blog post, I also created a fusion tables map that marked the location of the chemical accidents. To allow readers to learn more about each incident, I also included a link to any stories I could locate about the incident in the map's placemark infowindows.

I learned a lot this week about utilizing databases to pinpoint interesting and compelling stories. I was glad to have had the opportunity to work on the chemical incidents project on deadline. Next week I'll be finishing up the unclaimed property database.
