Phyllis J. Rouzer, a homemaker and former jewelry sales associate, died Dec. 27 of cancer at Lorien Assisted Living in Mount Airy.
The longtime resident of Poplar Springs, Howard County, was 92.
The daughter of a radio station executive and homemaker, the former Phyllis J. Rhoads was born in Syracuse, N.Y., and moved to Baltimore with her family when she was a child.
A 1937 graduate of Eastern High School, Mrs. Rouzer attended a secretarial school and worked briefly as a legal secretary before her marriage to George William Rouzer in 1939.
In 1951, the couple built a home in Poplar Springs, where they raised their two children.
Mr. Rouzer, who had been a Glenn L. Martin Co. engineer, died in 1997.
After her children were grown, Mrs. Rouzer went to work in the jewelry department of Woodward & Lothrop's Columbia store as a sales associate. She retired in the 1980s after nearly two decades in the department.
"She was a talented self-taught artist who worked in oils, charcoals, pastels and watercolors and also enjoyed handwork of all kinds," said her daughter, Patricia Ann Rouzer, a former Baltimore Sun reporter who lives in Westminster.
Mrs. Rouzer was a member for more than 60 years of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Poplar Springs, where funeral services were held Dec. 30.
In addition to Ms. Rouzer, she is survived by two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Her son, Larry Evans Rouzer, died in 1992.
