Recipe Finder: Faux Fudge

Dawn Jemellaro from Baltimore was looking for a recipe for a fudge that was made using pudding mix. She said her mother made it many times, but she had lost the recipe. Maureen Rochelle from Ellicott City sent in a recipe for fudge that she found in a Jell-O cookbook from the 1970s.

The recipe makes what I might call faux fudge, as it does not have the same texture or depth of flavor of more traditional fudge. However, it is so quick and easy that even a child could make it successfully. The mixture will be very thick at first, but it will thin out as it heats up. Also, be sure not to use instant pudding. This simple but delicious recipe is certain to satisfy any sweet tooth.


Edith Morin from Middletown, R.I., and her sisters are trying to find the recipe for a Jell-O mold that her mother made in the 1960s. As best she can remember, the bottom layer was a red Jell-O and the top layer was a mixture of merinque mixed with cut-up canned plums and plum juice.

Faux fudge

Makes: 1 pound

1 (3.9-ounce) package of chocolate pudding and pie filling (not instant)

2 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup milk

11/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted

1/4 cup nuts, chopped

Combine pudding, butter and milk in a saucepan. Bring to a full boil over medium heat, boil gently for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Quickly blend in sugar; add nuts. Pour into a greased or wax paper lined 8-by-4-inch pan. Cool; cut into squares. Store, covered in the refrigerator.
