Transformers hit the road Monday for weeklong trip to Peach Bottom

By Amanda Dolasinski | The York Dispatch

(MCT) - Traffic in southern York County could be slowed next week as two main power transformers travel to Peach Bottom Township as part of an $87 million investment, Exelon officials announced Thursday.

The transformers have already been shipped from South Korea to Philadelphia, then taken by barge to Havre de Grace, Md.

Next week, the transformers will travel from Havre de Grace on two self-propelled transporters going 3 to 5 mph and reach Peach Bottom by Friday, July 1, according to am Exelon news release.

Most of the travel will occur at night to minimize traffic delays, according to the news release.

Each transformer weights about 481,000 pounds and stands 35 feet high and 28 feet wide. Outgoing transformers will be shipped off site for salvage.

Exelon Nuclear entered into a contract with Hyundai to design and build the transformers for Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station.

Six will have been installed by the end of 2011, and a seventh will be stored on site as a spare.

Exelon has been working with Hake Rigging, as well as state and local emergency response and transportation officials to coordinate the effort. Detours and road closures will be marked in advance.

Exelon has also set up a "Transport Tracker" hotline to update motorists on the transformers' location. The phone number is 456-4932.

The route: The load, according to a Hake transport schedule, will enter Pennsylvania on Route 74 between 11 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday, July 1.

Lay Road will be detoured from Flintville Road to Broad Street between midnight and 3 a.m. July 1.

Between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., the Lay Road detour will be moved to the area from Flintville Road to Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station on Paper Mill Road.

The transformers will travel Flintville Road to Booker Road and are expected to arrive at the plant between 6:15 and 7:15 a.m., according to the schedule.
