May 23 marked a big day for the boys of Boy Scout Troop 007. During a spring Court of Honor ceremony led by Senior Patrol Leader Louis Colangelo and Scoutmaster John Alden, the boys were recognized for their advancements.
Mike Bishop, Robert Daniel, Will Connor, Eric Saulsbury, Aaron Brent, Nick Condron, Ryan Condron, Tom Condron, Alex Hanon, Austen Rhomann, A.J. Tribaldi, and Luke Barragan were among those honored. Many other scouts were recognized for earning merit badges.
Aside from the honors ceremony, these active scouts have recently returned from a whitewater rafting trip on the Youghegany River where, because of recent storms, the water was rough, but not too rough for these scouts to hang on and have a great adventure.
In June the scouts will travel to Laurel Caverns, in western Pennsylvania, for caving and rock climbing. July marks Troop 007's journey to Camp Ockanickon in Bucks County, Pa., a spot this troop has returned to yearly for earning merit badges along with enjoying the camaraderie of fellow scouts in a beautiful and natural setting.
August will be the time set aside for community service in the form of assisting the troop's sponsor organization, the Glenwood Lions Club. Glenwood Lions, Boy Scouts and the food stand at the Howard County Fair go hand in hand. Look for these local scouts when you're purchasing french fries at the fair.
It's just about dawn to dusk activity at the Shrine of St. Anthony on Folly Quarter Road this weekend when the Friars invite the community to an all-day celebration honoring the Feast of St. Anthony. Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. is the date set aside for a Day of Pilgrimage celebrating the Feast of St. Anthony.
The event, open to all in the family, will include Masses, live music, confessions, Adoration, food prepared by the Knights of Columbus, courtesy of the St. Louis Church Council, Rosary in the Grotto, sermons by Father James McCurry and Father Jude Winkler, tours of the Manor House and more.
Families are invited to attend some or all of the activities. Folks may bring lawn chairs or lawn blankets and simply come out and enjoy the gardens as well. There is no charge for this event, other than for food purchased from the Knights of Columbus.

What a busy week at West Friendship Elementary. Teams are getting ready for participation in the Relay for Life event in Glenwood, plans are being tweaked for the varied classroom end of year celebrations and the kindergarten students are finalizing rehearsals for the class musical which is set for June 10 at 9:45 a.m.

Congratulations to Melvina and Rochell Brown who became grandparents once again May 23 when their newest grandson, Remington McCombs Brown, was born. Sweet baby Remi is the brand new infant son of Randal and Heather Brown. Needless to say, Melvina and Rochell wasted no time in heading out to Michigan to meet their new "little Remi." Congratulations.
Speaking of the new crop of babies in our area. Had the pleasure of spending some time with Caleb Shurer, the soon to be 6-month-old grandson of Ann and Wally Chaillou. Caleb is a red-headed little angel and the delight of his parents Stefanie and Brian Shurer. Ann naturally beams when Caleb's name is mentioned. Blessings all around us.
Members of the Sunshine and Clover 4-H Club enjoyed the annual Howard County 4-H Volunteer Recognition Dinner May 14. The dinner, held at the Lisbon Fire Hall, included honors bestowed on adult organizational leaders Heather Spahr and Amy Brueckmann, two stalwart volunteers with the Sunshine 4-H. Other Sunshine and Clover volunteers who were recognized included Suni Grosko, Maggie and Sue Leatherman, Annie Miller and Charlie and Elaine Spertzel.
All who attended could not stop raving over the fabulous feast prepared by the Lisbon Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Assisting in the event, which was planned by a consortium of 4-H club leadership, were Sunshine and Clover 4-H president Mariah Grosko and vice president Alexandra Miller. Fellow club members Sheryl Bennett, Chris Rein and Amy Brueckmann are credited with a huge effort in helping make the awards dinner such a success.
Glenelg Country School alumni and faculty will meet at La Palapa Grill and Cantina, in Ellicott City, Friday, June 10 for the annual alumni gathering. The event is set for 6 to 9 p.m.
Looking for things to do with the kids this summer? Do you realize that the Howard County Historic Society is open each Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m.? The museum is at 8328 Court Ave., just off of Main Street in the historic district of Ellicott City.
Don't forget two upcoming yard sale and flea market events. The folks at Eyre Tour and Travel will hold a community yard sale Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. until all the goodies are sold. Eyre Bus is at the intersection of Triadelphia and Ten Oaks roads.
Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church will host an outdoor flea market and mini book sale set for Saturday, June 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church is at 14551 Burnt Woods Road, just past Glenelg High School.
