Why do people imagine the redeemed playing harps in Heaven? Perhaps it's the celestial sound that transports us above the troubles of the day.

You are invited to come enjoy the heavenly music of harp, violin and flute at Triadelphia Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 12950 Brighton Dam Road, Sunday, June 12 at 5 p.m. Cheryl Jacobs will present a harp concert accompanied by Daniel Ashton on violin and Geri Mueller-Schuitemaker on flute.

Born in Sri Lanka, Jacob immigrated with her parents to the United States at the age of 4. Just two years later, she fell in love with the harp and began lessons.

She has performed as a guest artist with the Washington Philharmonic Symphony, the Japanese Philharmonic, the Washington Choral Society and the Maryland Opera Theater.

Her travels have taken her to concert performances throughout Europe, including a tour in Germany as solo harpist with the Arabeska Dance Theater. Jacobs' music brings serenity, beauty, and elegance to listeners.

For more information on Jacobs, go to her website at dcharpist.com. The concert is free and all are welcome.

Do your car windows need washed? The River Hill High School poms squad have just the fundraiser to satisfy your need. They are eager to clean your ride Saturday, June 11 from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The River Hill PTSA is pleased to offer a summer preparation course for the PSAT and SAT exams. Students will be able to get in a course before the tests and before the busy fall school schedule. Classes are offered for both math and critical reading/writing Aug. 1-5 from 8:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Register by June 15 for either or both classes at http://www.riverhill.org or email Tswygert@verizon.net for more details.

Some parents fear the day when a child will be able to drive. In our family, the first son got his driver's license shortly before an unexpected serious family illness struck. It was such a blessing that he could provide transportation for himself and his brother.

Don't fear the independence. Train them to be responsible drivers. Spend lots of time as passengers while they practice good driving skills and pray others do the same. There will be driver's education summer sessions at River Hill High July 6-19 and Aug. 1-12. Both sessions run from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. To register, go to http://www.streetsmartsmd.com or call 443-355-4238.

Congratulations to the 21 students from St. Louis School who completed their first 5k race as part of a new initiative with Howard County Girls on the Run. It is a positive youth development program that inspires third- through fifth-grade girls to stay true to themselves and live free of societal stereotypes. The girls trained for 10 weeks under the guidance of volunteer coaches for the May race in Owen Brown Village. Way to go, gals.

Tracy Mayer is busily spreading the news about the 133rd annual Clarksville Picnic on the St. Louis Church grounds June 25 from noon-9 p.m. The picnic is close to the hearts of many St. Louis parishioners who work nearly all year in preparation.

This year's General Chairman Tony Kopera and Co-Chairman Tom Louden will have hundreds of helpers under the direction of various chairpersons. Rick Baker is in charge of the dinner tent with Edna Ballard and her crew in the dining room for the family style ham and fried chicken dinner.

Scott Sokolowski will be rounding up helpers for fast foods while Tony Comberiate and Chrissie Day seek help at game stands. Cele Daub and Robert Mayer are in charge of the silent auction. Dave Burton directs activities at the white elephant sale.

Many hands make work a pleasure all year as Hilda Mathieu and talented crafters create sewn items such as tote bags and aprons, jewelry, home décor and much more for Made in Clarksville.

Parking is free. There will be fun and games for all at the annual event. Mark your calendar and check this column next week for more details and an entertainment schedule. Yes, there is live entertainment all day long and a $20,000 raffle.

Another great family-friendly tradition is the 12th annual Independence Day Parade along Great Star Drive July 4 starting on Guilford Road at 9 a.m. The River Hill Community Association sponsors the parade and they need your help.

Get together with neighbors to create a patriotic float, help the kids decorate bikes to ride in the parade, pull together a group of musicians for a band or form a drill team to march in the parade. Maybe you can come up with something new and creative.

Help will also be needed directing traffic in the staging area, directing traffic and handing out water and snacks to parade participants. It's loads of fun. You'll find parade entry forms at Claret Hall or http://www.villageofriverhill.org.

For more information call Tracy at 410-531-1749 or send an email to events@villageofriverhill.org.
