Mary K. Margolis, Hopkins budget administrator, dies

Mary K. "Bebe" Margolis, a longtime Johns Hopkins University secretary and budget administrator, died March 14 of heart failure at her Cedarcroft home. She was 80.

Mary Alice Kahl, the daughter of a steelworker and a homemaker, was born and raised in Johnstown, Pa., where she graduated in 1948 from Westmont Upper Yoder High School.

She married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Simeon G. Margolis, in 1954.

After their marriage, the couple moved to Baltimore, where her husband joined the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as professor of medicine and biological chemistry, and Mrs. Margolis embarked on a 41-year career as a secretary and budget administrator at JHU.

She retired in 1996.

Active in the community, Mrs. Margolis was secretary to the Friends of the Govans Library and volunteered with CARES, a local food pantry.

She was an avid knitter and enjoyed vacationing in Rehoboth Beach, Del.

Plans for a memorial gathering were incomplete.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Margolis is survived by three daughters, Amy Elizabeth Hardin of Baltimore, Karen M. Griswold of Wellesley, Mass., and Susan Margolis of Cary, N.C.; a brother, William Kahl of Gettysburg, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
