Gertrude E. Matricciani, homemaker, dies

Gertrude E. Matricciani, a homemaker and former Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone employee, died of pneumonia Jan. 31 at Roland Park Place. She was 91 and had lived in North Homeland.

Born Gertrude Garratt in Baltimore and raised in Highlandtown, she was the daughter of David Garratt, a World War I veteran who ran a family-owned cooperage. Her mother, Elizabeth Hartley Garratt, worked at the Hutzler department store.

Mrs. Matricciani attended St. Brigid's School in Highlandtown and was a 1937 Seton High School graduate, where she played basketball.

While traveling by streetcar to the high school, she met a group of young Loyola College students, including her future husband, Albert J. Matricciani, a utility contractor. She later worked for the old Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co.

After her 1943 marriage, she became a homemaker and school volunteer. She was active at the Baltimore Academy of the Visitation, Loyola High School and Notre Dame Preparatory School.

She also enjoyed summer vacations at the family home in Wildwood, N.J., and playing the card game Tripoli with friends.

A Mass was offered Saturday at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.

Survivors include two sons, Court of Special Appeals Judge Albert J. Matricciani of Baltimore and Paul G. Matricciani of Mays Chapel; two daughters, Jane Shaab of Baltimore and Margaret Colleluori of Rodgers Forge; a sister, Charlotte Schenk of Catonsville; four grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Her husband of 33 years died in 1976.
