William E. "Bud" Crosland Sr., a retired career Army officer who served in Vietnam and Korea, died Jan. 22 of heart failure at Mercy Medical Center. He was 80.
He was born and raised in Bennettsville, S.C., where he graduated from Bennettsville High School in 1947.
After graduating in 1952 from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., he was commissioned an Army officer. He served in the late 1960s in Vietnam and again in 1972, when he helped to oversee the withdrawal of South Korean troops from Vietnam.
Colonel Crosland also served three tours of duty in Korea and tours in France and Germany. He was a lieutenant colonel at the time of his retirement in 1975.
During his career, he had participated in the initialization of the 1st Army honor guard at Aberdeen Proving Ground and had marched in the presidential inauguration of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
His many decorations included the Bronze Star for meritorious service, Army Commendation Medal and National Defense Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster.
He also had been awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
The former Aberdeen resident, who lived in Bel Air and Port Orange, Fla., had worked as a Maryland state tax auditor for 13 years until retiring in 1988.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3282 in Port Orange, Military Officers Association of America, Citadel Alumni Association and the Sojourners.
He was an avid fisherman and boater. He also enjoyed reading, and playing tennis and cards.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at McComas Funeral Home, 1317 Cokesbury Road, Abingdon. A memorial service will follow the visitation.
Colonel Crosland will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret "Betty" Loughlin; a son, William E. Crosland Jr. of Havre de Grace; five daughters, Elizabeth Ann Crosland of Forest Hill, Kathleen L. Crosland of Ellicott City, Margaret Carolyn Dietrich of Baltimore, Charlotte Victoria Evering of Aberdeen and Mary Ellen Keithley of Havre de Grace; a sister, Margaret Ann Crosland of Leesburg, Va.; and five grandchildren.
