Police say that a Department of Public Works crew on Saturday discovered the body of a 21-year-old man inside a vacant home.
The body of Derrius Currie, of the 2700 block of E. Federal St., was discovered at about 9 a.m. by a crew working in the 800 block of W. Lexington St. It was not clear how long he had been dead.
Currie is the third person killed this year in the 800 block of W. Lexington St., a block that includes the Poe Homes housing project.
Robert Murrow, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works, said a special services crew, which responds to 311 requests, was cleaning out a vacant lot and a vacant home that was sold last month by the city to a development company building apartments in that block.
According to court records, Currie had been in jail since April when he was charged with robbery and car theft. He was released around Oct. 26, when he pleaded guilty and received time served on a car theft charge.
Police said they did not have a motive or suspects. Detectives have solved about 49 percent of this year's killings, police said.
