Diane Y. Daugherty, a retired Baltimore County special education teacher, died Sept. 20 at St. Joseph Medical Center of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 76.
Diane Young, the daughter of a General Motors executive and a homemaker, was born in Hope, Ind., and was raised in Anderson, Ind., and Plainfield, N.J.
After graduating from Plainfield High School in 1951, she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from the University of Maryland, College Park.
She also did graduate work in education at Loyola College and what is now Towson University.
Mrs. Daugherty, who taught special education students in Baltimore County public schools, taught at Battle Monument School in Dundalk, the Ridge School in Towson and Dulaney High School for a decade before her 2000 retirement.
A Lutherville resident for more than 30 years, Mrs. Daugherty had also owned and operated an antiques business that specialized in silver and china.
She enjoyed vacationing at Rehoboth Beach, Del., and liked visiting flea markets. She was fond of Celtic music and had attended a recent concert of the Celtic Thunder-Irish Singers.
Mrs. Daugherty was an accomplished baker and was known for her Nameless Cake and butterscotch pie.
Services were Sept. 25.
Surviving are her companion of 35 years, John Webb McPherson of Lutherville; two sons, Charles G. Daugherty Jr. of Cockeysville and David Y. Daugherty of Timonium; a daughter, Deborah K. Daugherty Richardson of Annapolis; and four grandchildren. Another son, Andrew K. Daugherty, died in 1984. Her marriage to Charles G. Daugherty Sr. ended in divorce.
