Nancy Christie dies at age 85

Nancy Christie, a retired interior designer and manager of the Baltimore Museum of Art's gift shop, died July 21 of complications from Alzheimer's disease complications at the Blakehurst retirement community in Towson. The former Roland Park resident was 85.

Born Nancy Kidder in Charlottesville, Va., she was a 1943 graduate of St. Anne's Belfield School. She earned a degree from Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and later opened an interior decorating business in Charlottesville. There she met her future husband, William George Hupfeldt, who went on to become chief executive officer of the Esskay Meat Co.

After marrying and moving to Baltimore, she became the gift shop buyer at the Baltimore Museum of Art. She was also active in the Junior League and the Federated Garden Club. She and her business partner, Janet Waters Flagle, designed the windows and interior displays of the old A.H. Fetting Jewelers on Charles Street and in Towson. Their business was called Jancy LTD.

Her first marriage ended in divorce. She later married architect Peter Graham Christie. They traveled widely together, and she enjoyed collecting art objects on her trips.

A life memorial will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at L'Hirondelle Club at 7611 L'Hirondelle Club Road.

Survivors include a son, Christie Edward Hupfeldt of Haverford, Pa.; two daughters, Kim Hupfeldt of Palmetto, Fla., and Julie Hupfeldt Miller of Ruxton; three stepdaughters, Alison Graham Tucker of Portsmouth, N.H., Jean Alden Farquhar of Perth, Australia, and Gillian Turner Christie of Santa Barbara, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Her husband of 27 years died in 2008. A son, William Hupfeldt, died in 2004.
