Karen E. Dunn dies at age 66

Karen E. Dunn, whose real estate career spanned more than 20 years, died July 16 of cancer at her Edgewater home. She was 66.

Karen Eugenia Carbaugh was born and raised in Hagerstown, where she graduated in 1961 from South Hagerstown High School.

She attended Hood College and earned a bachelor's degree in 1969 from the University of Maryland, College Park.

During the 1960s, Mrs. Dunn taught developmentally disabled students in Carroll County public schools and established the Head Start program in the county. After leaving Carroll County in 1968, she held teaching positions during the 1970s in Maryland, Florida and Turkey.

From 1978 to 1982, she was vice president and director of training for the Auto Train Corp., whose services were taken over by Amtrak after it went into bankruptcy.

After earning her real estate license, Mrs. Dunn worked for Merrill Lynch and Prudential Real Estate and in the corporate headquarters of O'Conor Piper & Flynn.

At the time of her retirement in 2005, Mrs. Dunn was manager of Coldwell Banker's Church Circle office in Annapolis.

Mrs. Dunn was an avid gardener and bridge player. She also enjoyed taking courses at the Anne Arundel County Senior Center in Edgewater.

She was a member of the Martini Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baltimore and had previously been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Annapolis and Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Greenbelt, serving as an elder in both congregations.

A memorial service will be held at noon Monday at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis.

Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Richard L. Dunn, a retired business consultant; a son, Christian Dunn of Baltimore; a brother, Kenneth Carbaugh of Hagerstown; and two sisters, Melody Hain of Hagerstown and Candace Clevenger of Woodbridge, Va.
