Albert J. "Jay" Perry III dies at 62

Albert J. "Jay" Perry III, a financial adviser and collector of classic racing cars, died Wednesday of lung cancer at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 62.

Mr. Perry was born in Baltimore and raised in Ruxton. He was a 1966 graduate of Gilman School and earned his pre-law degree in 1970 from Emory University in Atlanta.

An Air Force veteran, he earned his law degree in the early 1970s from the University of Florida Frederic G. Levin School of Law.

He was a trust officer at Mercantile-Safe Deposit and Trust Co. until 1983, when he left to establish A.J. Perry & Co. Inc., a financial advisory firm in the 1000 block of St. Paul St.

At the time of his death, Mr. Perry had not retired from the family-owned and -operated company.

The former Guilford resident was president of the Rotary Club of Baltimore, a member of the Maryland Club and treasurer of the Roland Mews Homeowners' Association, where he had lived for the past eight years.

For more than a decade, Mr. Perry had served on the board of the Jemicy School in Owings Mills, and most recently had been the board's treasurer.

Mr. Perry, who had enjoyed amateur auto racing when he was in his 20s, chaired the board of Baltimore Concours d' Elegance Inc., which staged an annual classic car show at the Inner Harbor.

He also was an aficionado of classic racing cars and had owned two Cobras and a grand touring Ferrari.

Mr. Perry was a connoisseur of art, and for the past 20 years, traveled to Italy and France with a circle of close friends, where he visited art galleries and antique shops.

He was a communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles St., where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 27.

Surviving are a son, W. Andrew Perry of Baltimore; a daughter, Katherine P. Trumbauer of Baltimore; two sisters, Patricia P. Coughlin of Hollis, N.H., and Katherine Burgum of Haverford, Pa.; and two granddaughters. His marriage to the former Laura Scott ended in divorce.
