The race hit the mountains for the first time on a 101-mile trek from Tournus to Station des Rousses.

Winner: Sylvain Chavanel took his second stage win in 4 hours, 22 minutes, 52 seconds.

Yellow jersey: Chavanel took the overall lead from Fabian Cancellara, who plummeted to 58th place, more than 13 minutes adrift. Lance Armstrong is 14th, 3:16 behind Chavanel.

Next stage: Sunday's stage enters the Alps on a 117.4-mile jaunt to Morzine-Avoriaz that has two Category 1 climbs and an uphill finish.AP
