If your idea of a Jersey Shore getaway doesn't involve Snookie, The Situation or JWoww, then check out the family-oriented offerings of The Wildwoods, N.J. What you will find is one of the only beach lacrosse tournaments in the world, amusement park rides and a maritime festival.
THE PLAN: Leave the hair gel and blowdryer at home, but bring some friends for the lacrosse. You'll need five players to field a team. Each game will have two 18-minute halves with a four-minute break. Teams compete in divisions — kids age 9-18, men's open and women's open — and play a minimum of three games.
If you're not up for a physical challenge, you can still get your heart rate up at Morey's Adventure Pier. It includes the classics, such as a roller coaster, carousel and Tilt-a-Whirl. But for hair bigger than DJ Pauly D's, try the Screamin' Swing. It's a 60-foot-tall swing set that propels you at 60 mph.
For the non-adrenaline junkies, there's the much tamer Maritime Festival at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse Saturday and Sunday. There will be garden and lighthouse tours, kids' activities, and arts and crafts.
