Retired enforcer Bob Probert, who played for the Red Wings and Blackhawks and struggled to overcome drinking problems, died Monday. He was 45.
Family friend Rich Rogow said Probert was on a boat in Lake St. Clair with his wife, children and in-laws when he "developed severe chest pains."
Rogow says Probert was rushed to Ontario's Windsor Regional Medical Center, where he died.
Probert played for the Red Wings from 1985-1994 and for the Blackhawks from 1995-2002.
•The Blackhawks' Antti Niemi filed for salary arbitration Monday. Last week, Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said negotiations with Niemi's agent, Bill Zito, on a new contract continue for the goaltender and he expected a deal to get done.
•The Oilers signed top overall draft pick Taylor Hall to a three-year, entry-level contract. Hall's deal includes the maximum base salary of $900,000 per season and could end up netting him around $3.75 million each year depending on how many performance bonuses he reaches.
