Beverly M. Johnson dies

Beverly Macias Johnson, a retired civil engineer and World War II naval aviator, died June 24 of a gastric obstruction at Devon Hill condominiums in North Baltimore. He was 85.

Mr. Johnson was born in Lakewood, N.J., and spent his early years there before moving to Hagerstown, graduating in 1941 from Hagerstown High School.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and was commissioned a naval aviator in 1943. Mr. Johnson was assigned to a Marine Air Transport squadron in the Pacific.

He remained an active reservist and commanded the Marine Corps' 1st Engineering Battalion.

After the war, Mr. Johnson enrolled at North Carolina State University, where in 1950 he earned his civil engineering degree.

He began his engineering career in Richmond, Va., with R. Stuart Royer Associates, and in 1952 joined Whitman, Requardt & Associates in Baltimore.

Mr. Johnson left Whitman, Requardt & Associates and joined Purdum & Jeschke, where he worked for a decade before returning to his former firm. He retired in 1989.

Mr. Johnson was active in the design and planning of utility systems during the early stages of the development of Columbia in the 1960s.

His work brought him recognition from the American Consulting Engineers Council. He was also honored by the Air Force for his design of a utility planning program at Hurlburt Air Force Base in Florida.

He was a member of the Engineering Society of Baltimore.

Mr. Johnson was an avid golfer and had five holes-in-one during his lifetime, family members said.

He was a former member and board member of the Towson Golf and Country Club and the Country Club of Maryland.

Mr. Johnson had been a member of University Baptist Church, where he had been board chairman.

Services were held at his church Monday.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, the former Elizabeth Pruitt; four daughters, Anna J. Funkhouser of Ruxton, Elizabeth J. Saffer of Orlando, Fla., Barbara J. Bazzel of Atlanta and Alice P. Johnson of Irvine, Calif.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
