Edgar Wilford Weal Jr. dies

Edgar Wilford Weal Jr., a retired trucking company executive and co-founder of an Ellicott City ice cream shop, died June 17 of heart failure at Northwest Hospital Center. He was 93.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Pigtown, Mr. Weal was a 1935 graduate of Polytechnic Institute.

He attended the old Baltimore College of Commerce and enlisted in the Army in 1941. After graduating from officer candidate school and earning his commission, Mr. Weal served in Europe and stateside.

Mr. Weal, who was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict, attained the rank of major and served at the Pentagon in Washington, as well as in Korea and Japan.

After World War II, he began his career with the McLean Trucking Co. where he rose to become regional sales manager. He retired in 1979.

He had been an active member and a former president of the Traffic Club of Baltimore.

Mr. Weal, a longtime Ellicott City resident, was a co-founder in 1984 with his wife and two sons of Soft Stuff Ice Cream. "Our ice cream is soft, and one of our most popular flavors is vanilla-chocolate twist," said his wife of 30 years, the former Joan Kelly.

He was an original member of Turf Valley Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf and was a past president of the Men's Golf Association.

Mr. Weal was a master Mason and a member of the Grand Lodge of Maryland.

He was married for 38 years to the former Virginia Lee Armentrout, who died in 1979.

Services were Monday.

Also surviving are two sons, Michael Weal of Woodstock and Steve Weal of Sykesville; a stepson, Guy Tingos of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Corinne Davidson of Ellicott City and Kym Bean of Greensboro, N.C.; five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
