Charles R. "Chip" Watson Sr. dies

Charles R. "Chip" Watson Jr., a Howard County commercial assessor, died in his sleep Saturday at his Laurel home. He was 55.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Woodlawn, Mr. Watson was a 1972 graduate of McDonogh School.

He attended the University of Virginia and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Salisbury University.

For the last 25 years, he had been a commercial assessor with the Howard County Department of Assessments and Taxation.

The former Columbia resident was an accomplished gourmet cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends.

"He was known for his crab cakes, crab imperial and crab quiche," said his wife of 25 years, the former Laurie Shaw.

He also was an avid crossword puzzle fan.

Mr. Watson was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 10755 Scaggsville Road in Laurel, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Watson is survived by his son, Zachary A. Watson of Laurel; a sister, Kay Ayres of Ocean City; and many nieces and nephews.
