Kiwis draw attention

Four-time champion Italy was on the wrong end of the latest surprising result at this year's World Cup, held to a 1-1 draw Sunday by New Zealand.

The defending champ Italians got their only goal in the Group F match in Nelspruit from the penalty spot, further exposing its lack of finishing power up front.

New Zealand took the lead against Italy when Shane Smeltz tapped in a ball that had glanced off defender Fabio Cannavaro in the seventh minute. It was New Zealand's only shot on goal the entire match and beat Federico Marchetti, who was replacing injured veteran Gianluigi Buffon.

Vincenzo Iaquinta equalized in the 29th from the penalty spot after Tommy Smith brought down Daniele De Rossi in the area.

New Zealand is playing at only its second World Cup. The Kiwis lost all three matches in 1982 but have two points from two matches this time — the same as Italy.

"I think that stopped the nation," New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert said. "It's the most incredible result we've had across the board. As a football coach, it's way above anything we've achieved in the history of the game."

Brazil 3, Ivory Coast 1: In Johannesburg, Brazil achieved its first objective: advancing out of Group G. Luis Fabiano scored a pair of goals, one with the aid of touches with his arm and his hand, while Elano added another in a physical match that saw Brazilian star Kaka ejected with two late yellow cards.

"It's true, the ball really touched my hand and then my shoulder," Fabiano said of his second goal. "But it was involuntary. It was one of the greatest goals I've scored in my career."

Kaka will be suspended for Brazil's next match, against Portugal, after getting into an altercation with Kader Keita.

"The red card was completely unfair," Brazil coach Dunga said.

Didier Drogba, playing from the start for the first time since breaking his right arm in a warm-up game, scored the lone goal for Ivory Coast with a header.

Paraguay 2, Slovakia 0: Enrique Vera and Cristian Riveros scored as Paraguay took a big step toward the round of 16 in a Group F match in Bloemfontein. The win puts Paraguay atop Group F with four points after two matches.

Corner kicks: The pressure will be on Cristiano Ronaldo to start producing goals when Portugal meets North Korea on Monday as Deco, who missed training with a hip injury, will miss the match. … The Nigerian team has asked its government to provide security for midfielder Sani Kaita after his red card during a World Cup loss to Greece prompted more than 1,000 death threats.
