Anne H. Rogers dies at age 76

Anne H. Rogers, a lay chaplain who visited the sick in area hospitals and nursing homes as well as in their homes, died Sunday of pneumonia and emphysema at Gilchrist Hospice Care. She was 76.

Anne Leary Holland, the daughter of a Chesapeake Bay pilot and a homemaker, was born in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park.

She was a 1951 graduate of Friends School and attended the University of Delaware.

In 1956, she married Hubert E. "Chuck" Rogers, and lived in Mountain Lakes, N.J., before settling in Towson and later Wiltondale. Mr. Rogers died in 2006.

During the early 1970s, Mrs. Rogers completed extensive training to become a lay chaplain, and then visited hospitals, nursing homes and shut-ins, offering comfort and encouragement.

She also helped establish an oncology support program at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where she spent many volunteer hours working with cancer patients and their families.

Mrs. Rogers was later trained by a national ministry called Divorce Care to help those dealing with separation and divorce.

"Her groups enabled many to begin a process of healing, which positioned dozens of people to rebuild their lives," said her daughter, Joanna Rogers Wise of Towson.

Mrs. Rogers had been an active member of Towson Presbyterian Church and Valley Presbyterian Church, and at her death was a member of Loch Raven Presbyterian Church.

She also became a facilitator for Bible Study Fellowship, a national organization, and for the past eight years, led many Bible study groups.

Mrs. Rogers, who moved to the Oak Crest Village retirement community in Parkville a decade ago, was an accomplished seamstress and cross-stitcher.

She also enjoyed maintaining a correspondence with family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 27 at Oak Crest Village, 8800 Walther Blvd.

Also surviving is a son, Eugene Holland "Buck" Rogers of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
