DeRosa injury leaves Giants couple of hitters short

It is looking more and more like Mark DeRosa will need a second wrist surgery, which probably would end his season. He's in the first year of a two-year, $12 million deal with the Giants, who remain a hitter or two short. … Mike Lowell (above) remains a possibility for the Rangers. Rookie first baseman Justin Smoak, a switch hitter, has been terrible against left-handers, and Lowell's playing time has been limited by David Ortiz in Boston. … The Brewers might have to release Trevor Hoffman, although they continue to try to find him a role in the bullpen. The key will be whether he still fits when LaTroy Hawkins comes off the DL. … The Padres have become a destination for teams seeking relievers. In addition to Heath Bell, Luke Gregerson, Tim Stauffer (currently sidelined after an appendectomy), Mike Adams and Adam Russell, teams are studying minor leaguers Craig Italiano and Wynn Pelzer. The Padres won't make any moves while in contention. … Jorge Posada still wants to catch, but Francisco Cervelli is likely to get the majority of time behind the plate the rest of the way. The Yankees want to keep Posada's bat in the lineup, so he's likely to become a primary DH. … The Pirates seem likely to release second baseman Aki Iwamura. They're expected to call up third baseman Pedro Alvarez and outfielder Jose Tabata soon and plan to take a long look at Steve Pearce at first base when he's off the DL.
