NFL owners voted Tuesday to put Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014 in the new $1.6 billion Meadowlands Stadium that will become home to the New York Jets and Giants this year. It's the first time the league has gone to a cold weather site with no dome and, until now, those places couldn't even bid.

There are three possible dates for the game — Feb. 2, 9, 16, depending on the structure of the 2013 season.

The league made an exception for the New York area, and New York only.

"We believe the owners have the faith in us that 31/2 years from now we'll put on a remarkable event," Giants co-owner Jonathan Tisch told NFL Network.

It took four votes by NFL owners to pick New Jersey over Miami and Tampa.

The current Super Bowl low at kickoff is 39 degrees (1972, New Orleans). The average range for the NYC area in February is 24 to 40.

"People talk about the weather, but, you know, this is football, not beach volleyball," New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

The upcoming Super Bowl, in February 2011, will be at Cowboys Stadium.
