Mary Lee Evering, a retired registered nurse and an accomplished pastel artist, died May 2 from complications of a stroke at Gilchrist Hospice Care. She was 84.
Mary Priscilla Lee was born and raised in Baltimore. After graduating from the Samuel Ready School in 1944, she earned her nursing degree from the Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1947.
She worked as a nurse at Union Memorial until 1951, when she married George C. Evering Sr., a Baltimore attorney.
Mr. Evering, who had been a partner in the firm of Evering, Fair, Vidali & Wagner, died in 2006.
After raising her family, Mrs. Evering resumed her nursing career in 1971 as a school nurse at Martin Boulevard Elementary School. She spent the majority of her career at Warren Elementary School, from which she retired in 1991.
The former Northeast Baltimore resident had lived in Baldwin since 1978.
Mrs. Evering enjoyed doing pastel drawings of animals, family members said.
She also was a voracious reader and especially liked reading Arctic and Antarctic adventure stories.
Mrs. Evering was not a particular fan of exercise.
"Her idea of exercise," said her daughter, Wendy Anne Baker of Fallston, "was a good brisk sit."
Services were held Wednesday.
Also surviving is a son, George C. "Chris" Evering Jr. of Bel Air; and a granddaughter. A son, Michael Evering, died in 1988; another son, Douglass Evering, died in 1994.
