Sadie G. Curtis

Sadie G. Curtis, a homemaker and longtime Anne Arundel County resident, died April 28 from complications of Alzheimer's disease at Household of Angels, a Severna Park assisted-living facility. She was 78.

Sadie Garrett, the daughter of a Swarthmore College professor and a homemaker, was born and raised in Swarthmore, Pa.

After graduating in 1948 from Swarthmore High School, she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1952 from Oberlin College, and two years later, a master's degree in chemistry from Purdue University.

In 1952, she married William R. Curtis, a retired career naval officer who later worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A Severna Park resident since 1970, Mrs. Curtis was an active member and former president of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Annapolis. She also had been a member of the church's choir.

She had also been a Girl Scout leader and had been a member of the board of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland.

Plans for a memorial service were incomplete Thursday.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Robert F. Curtis of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Cynthia R. Curtis of Severna Park and Carol L. Curtis of Berkeley, Calif.; a sister, Ruth Shankweiler of Storrs, Conn.; and three grandchildren.
