Kenneth Edward Carfine, a Treasury Department official, died of cancer Friday at the Gilchrist Hospice Care. He was 60 and lived in Woodbine.
Born in Baltimore and raised in Catonsville, he was a 1967 Mount St. Joseph's High School graduate. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting at the University of Baltimore.
In 2007, he was named the Treasury Department's fiscal assistant secretary. He was administered the oath of office by Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. in the historic Cash Room in Washington.
Mr. Carfine joined the Treasury Department in 1973 and worked in banking and cash management among many other duties.
He received the Treasury Department's Alexander Hamilton Award in 2009. He was also honored as a Great Federal Employee that year. He helped implement a national debit card for Social Security benefits and oversaw an affordable housing and renewable energy program aimed at spurring economic growth.
Mr. Carfine enjoyed doing home improvement projects and gardening. He had coached his sons' sports teams and followed professional sports. He also watched films.
A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 1125 St. Michael's Road in Poplar Springs.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, the former Deborah Joan Schmidt; two sons, Kenneth Edward Carfine Jr. of Baltimore and Gregory Scott Carfine of Eldersburg; four brothers, Richard Carfine of Frederick, Armond Carfine Jr. of Catonsville, James Carfine of Spring, Texas, and Ronald Carfine of Baltimore; two sisters, Elaine Hanratty of Eldersburg and Carol Chachulski of Ellicott City; and two granddaughters.
