John J. Hudak Jr., a retired mechanical engineer, died April 14, his 79th birthday, of lung disease at his Springfield, W.Va.
Mr. Hudak was born in Baltimore and raised in Dundalk. He was a 1949 graduate of Dundalk High School, where he had been an outstanding athlete and played varsity lacrosse and soccer.
He worked as a mechanical engineer at Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Sparrows Point plant from 1949 until retiring in 1995.
Before retiring, the longtime Rosedale resident had been a part-time mechanical engineering instructor at then-Dundalk Community College.
He had played the bugle with the St. James Players Drum & Bugle Corps. He was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan.
He enjoyed working around his Springfield home, where he had lived since 1993. He also enjoyed fishing and camping.
Mr. Hudak's wife of 36 years, the former Jean Michael, died in 1986.
Services were held April 19.
Surviving are his wife of 20 years, the former Carolyn Davidson; two sons, Steve M. Hudak of Abingdon and Michael Hudak of Essex; two daughters, Jackie Flanagan of Westminster and Mary Jane Riebert of Snow Hill; a stepson, Jim Graham of Springfield, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Cathy Beckman of Levels, W.Va., and Janet Rizer of Ridgeley, W.Va.; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
