Just because a party is black tie doesn't mean it's stuffy. The crowd that gathered for the Caritas: Saint Agnes Spring Gala in the ballroom at the Hyatt Regency may have been wearing gowns and tuxedos, but as soon as the band started up, the dance floor filled.
Saint Agnes Cancer Center director Dr. Carole Miller boogied with her colleagues, before pulling Saint Agnes Foundation president Sherry Welch out of her seat to join them.
"This is a bunch of doctors who never get a chance to party together, so we love throwing this for them. It's a good feeling," said Barbara Bozzuto, Saint Agnes Hospital board chair.
"It's a chance for everyone to see each other in a more relaxed atmosphere," explained Jack Stansbury, Saint Agnes Foundation board chair.
Aris Melissaratos, senior advisor to the president at Johns Hopkins University, stood on the sidelines chatting with Bonnie Phipps, president/CEO of Saint Agnes Healthcare, about how long he had known one of the evening's honorees, George Moniodis.
"He's one of the first people I met when I came over from Greece in 1956," Melissaratos said.
Event chair Dave Carney said the committee decided to upgrade this year's party, which in previous years was a more casual, buffet-style dinner.
"We went formal with a seated meal, and totally shocked people," he said with a chuckle.
This was the first time that money raised would be going to the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The evening's silent auction also included a NICU baby registry, where guests could buy gifts for the unit ranging from diapers and meals to equipment like oxygen monitors and incubators.
As the band played on, Bozzuto and her husband, Tom Bozzuto, Bozzuto Group CEO, remained among the last on the dance floor. Others were winding down.
"Great food, great drinks," commented Antony Gross, MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate vice president, as he stood near the dessert buffet with his wife, Alicia Gross, board member Harry Davis, and his wife, Deena Davis, Alpha Omega Bioservices software developer.
Deena Davis pointed to her bronze peep-toe pumps. "All my shoes have a wear limit. And I've reached it with these."
