Wednesday was the anniversary of the date in 1899 when the city's mercury first touched minus-7 degrees Fahrenheit. Baltimore County temperatures hit 14 below. The high was 2 above. The cold created a sensation at the Sun Building's thermometer. "All day long there was a throng gathered about the instrument, striving to note the variations of the mercury," The Sun reported. Minus-7 remains the city's coldest reading. We have seen it four times since, most recently on Jan. 22, 1984.
