As high as this storm might end up ranking on Baltimore's official records, which date to 1883, no storm on the books has ever matched the colossal storm in January 1772. It is still known as the Washington and Jefferson Snowstorm because both men noted it in their records. The nor'easter left 30 to 36 inches across the region, paralyzing travel for two weeks. Five weeks passed before the mails resumed. Another storm in March that year dropped 17 more inches in Howard County.
