A homeless man was struck and killed by a CSX train in Ellicott City on Thursday night, police said.

A CSX engineer reported seeing an unknown object on the tracks about a half-mile from Maryland Avenue about 8:45 p.m. but was unable to stop in time. He then reported hitting a person.

Edwin "Eddie" Morrow, 41, was found dead on the tracks a short time later.

Detectives found alcohol in Morrow's backpack and detected an odor of alcohol on him, police said. They found identification in his wallet.

Sharon Lizer, who works at the Trolley Stop bar in Ellicott City, said she asked Morrow to leave about 8 p.m. Thursday.

"I served him one beer, but he kept nodding off," Lizer said Friday. "I told him that he couldn't be sleeping at the bar."

An hour later, she saw emergency vehicles racing past. She said she "had a bad feeling" when she came to work Friday and heard that a homeless man had been killed by a train.

A police spokeswoman said Morrow's family had been notified. Police say they don't believe foul play was involved.

Morrow was well-known in Ellicott City's historic Main Street area. Lizer said he would come into the Trolley Stop "a couple of times a week" to take out food or have a drink at the bar.

She said he hadn't finished the one beer she served him Thursday when she asked him to leave.

An employee of the Phoenix Emporium restaurant on Main Street said Morrow had been turned away or told to leave on several occasions because of his erratic behavior.
