Edward William Galloway, a civil engineer who was a retired swimming pool salesman, died Jan. 26 of cardiac arrest at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The longtime Ellicott City resident was 71.

Mr. Galloway was born and raised in Arbutus. After graduating from Catonsville High School in 1957, he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering in 1961 from the University of Maryland, College Park.

From 1961 to 1976, he worked as a civil engineer for the Maryland Highway Department.

After leaving the highway department, he owned and operated a Kirby Vacuum franchise for five years. After that, he worked in swimming pool construction.

He was a salesman for Sylvan Pools and then joined Maryland Pools, where he worked in sales. He retired in 2007.

Mr. Galloway enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City.

Services were held Jan. 29.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, the former Elizabeth Nicholson; a son, Steven T. Galloway of Marriottsville; two daughters, Bethaney Galloway of Ellicott City and Kimberly Lowman of Shinnston, W.Va.; a sister, Dorothy Lupton of Catonsville; and seven grandchildren.
