Don Gansauer wrote from Canton on Monday after a night of high winds: "My toilets don't have any water in them this morning. Is this because of the high winds?" Sounds goofy, but he may be right. Toilets have inverted-U-shaped drains and vents to the roof to keep sewage smells out of the house. High wind blowing across the top of the "stench pipe" lowers air pressure in the pipe. That can slurp some toilet bowl water over the drain hump, and the bowl water drops. It's the Bernoulli Effect. Look it up.
