Visiting American too much for Midshipmen, 62-45
Liz Leer and Michelle Kirk each scored 17 points to power visiting American past Navy, 62-45, on Wednesday. The Eagles (13-7, 6-0 Patriot League) scored 31 points in each half. Angela Myers had 12 for the Midshipmen (11-10, 3-3).
More games: : Freshman Chelsea Sanders and Casey Morton combined for 33 points as UMES defeated visiting North Carolina Central, 64-43. Sanders tied for the game high with 18 points on 5-for-12 shooting to go along with four rebounds while Morton added 15. The win improved the Hawks to 7-9 overall and 3-7 in nonconference games. The Eagles fell to 6-13. ... Meghan Tait scored the Shorewomen's final 13 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, to lift visiting Washington College over Ursinus, 59-58. Tait finished with a game-high 22 points. The Shorewomen improved to 7-11 overall and 5-8 in the conference, while the Bears fell to 8-10 and 5-8. ... Lyndsay Burton had 16 points and 11 rebounds as host Johns Hopkins beat Franklin & Marshall, 58-54. The Blue Jays (10-7, 8-5 Centennial Conference) trailed 23-21 at the half. The Diplomats fell to 8-10 and 4-9.

Navy men's lacrosse team favored to win Patriot again
The Navy men's lacrosse team was voted the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League championship. The Midshipmen have won at least a share of the regular-season Patriot League title in five of the six seasons they have been in the conference. Navy secured 11 of the 14 first-place votes (they were eligible for only 12 because schools could not vote for themselves). Bucknell accounted for the remaining three first-place votes. Mids long-stick defensive midfielder Jaren Woeppel, a two-time All-Patriot League selection, was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
More men's lacrosse: : Providence announced its 2014 recruiting class, which includes attackman Adam MacBride (Severna Park) and midfielder Andrew Barton (St. Paul's).
Women's lacrosse: : Mount St. Mary's was picked fifth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Two-time defending champion Sacred Heart was selected as the favorite.
Softball: : Towson, which has seven starters back from last season's 34-22 team, finished first in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll, receiving 45 points compared with 43 for runner-up Hofstra.
Football: : Former Frostburg State assistant Ernie McCook was named assistant head coach/offensive coordinator at Shepherd.
Gymnastics: : Towson senior Alise McDonald (Randallstown) and sophomore Avis Hixon were named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively.

Ex-Greyhound Moller to play soccer in Sweden
Former Loyola soccer player Sarra Moller, now a Greyhounds assistant coach, has signed a contract to play for Kvarnsvedens IK, a professional women's soccer team in Sweden. Moller is the first Loyola women's soccer player to play professionally overseas. Moller concluded her college playing career in 2008 by earning All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference first-team honors for the fourth consecutive year. She was the conference's Defensive Player of the Year during her freshman and senior seasons.
NHL: : The Washington Capitals recalled goaltender Braden Holtby from Hershey of the American Hockey League to back up Michal Neuvirth. Jos? Theodore left after the second period of Tuesday night's win over the Islanders with a lower body injury and is day-to-day, and fellow goalie Semyon Varlamov has been sidelined since early December with knee and groin injuries. The Capitals assigned defenseman Karl Alzner to Hershey.
Pro basketball: : The Maryland GreenHawks of the Premier Basketball League agreed to terms with combo guard Lamar Castile, who played two years at Beaver County Community College and has since played in the CBA, in Rome and Mexico, and in the PBL with the Buffalo Stampede, where he averaged 20 points.
Golf: : Danny Balin of Rockville finished tied for second at the PGA Stroke Play Championship at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with Jeff Sorenson of Blaine, Minn. They were three strokes behind Frank Esposito of Florham Park, N.J., who shot 67-69-69-71-276 on the par-72, 7,020-yard Wanamaker course.
