The No. 6 Hereford girls took command about midway through Tuesday's Baltimore County indoor track championships and cruised to a fourth straight team title.
But the Hereford boys took over in a different way at about the same time. No. 8 Hereford scored 18 points in both the 3,200 and pole vault just a few minutes apart to take the lead and completed the sweep with its first team title in 31 years in the meet at the 5th Regiment Armory.
Mason Rivera and Ben Bemis took the top two spots in the 3,200 meters. Rivera won it in 10 minutes, 31.5 seconds, edging out Bemis (10:35.5). That came right after Anthony Monacelli, Alexander Tate and Brendan Martello took second, third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault - giving the Bulls the quick 36 points.
"That just flipped everything around," Hereford coach Jason Bowman said.
Hereford earned 18 more points in the shot put, thanks to a 1-2 finish by Chris Nash (47-3.25) and Charlie Ryan (44-7.75). The Bulls won with 70 points, beating out No. 10 Dulaney (54). The Hereford boys last won a county team title in 1979.
The girls finished with 102 points for an easy victory over Pikesville (55). The Bulls got two victories from Emily VandeWater, who won both the 800 (2:33.5) and the 3,200 (12:20.8).
Hereford also captured the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. The Bulls got second-place finishes from Jenny Sparks (55 hurdles), Emily Randall (500) and Jordana Lehman (pole vault).
"Four in a row is sweet," Hereford girls coach Sam Bowen said. "It's extra special because this team is very young; only three seniors competed for us tonight."
Pikesville was one of the night's bigger surprises, for both the boys and girls. Corey Cutler won both the 300 (37.6) and 500 (1:10.4) as the boys led halfway through before finishing fifth.
Sasha Smallwood from Pikesville set a meet and county record in winning the pole vault (11-7). Smallwood broke her county record (11-6). In addition, she wiped out the meet record (10-0) she had shared with Lehman, who finished second. Pikesville also got victories from Takera Smalley (7.59, 55 meters) and the 800 relay team.
