Brooks' late 3 helps UMBC women edge Boston U., 65-63
Sophomore guard Katie Brooks hit a 3-pointer with less than two minutes remaining, and the UMBC women's basketball team hit four of six free throws in the final 19 seconds to defeat host Boston University, 65-63, on Sunday. Senior guard Carlee Cassidy scored a game-high 18 points and added six assists and five rebounds for the Retrievers (9-11, 3-4 America East). Cassidy's five 3-pointers moved her into third place in conference history with 224. UMBC led 41-40 with 16:41 left, but the Terriers (9-10, 5-2) used a 14-6 run over the next 5:18 to take a seven-point lead, 54-47. The Retrievers responded with 11 of the next 12 points, sparked by six points by sophomore center and Randallstown native Tope Obajolu (15 points) to grab a 58-55 advantage with 5:29 remaining. Boston University regained the lead on a jumper by center Kerry Cashman less than a minute later, and the Terriers maintained their one-point edge until Brooks hit from beyond the arc with 1:47 to go to give the Retrievers a 61-59 advantage. Cashman, Cassidy and junior guard Michele Brokans went 5-for-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the victory. Chantell Alford led Boston University with 16 points.
Old Dominion 57, Towson 50: : The visiting Lady Monarchs used a 25-7 run over the final 11 minutes to defeat the Tigers, who were led by Shanae Baker-Brice's 18 points. Towson (9-9, 3-4 Colonial Athletic Association) led 41-32 with 11:11 to play before Old Dominion (8-9, 6-1) started its comeback. "I'm disappointed in our inability to finish today," Towson coach Joe Mathews said. "Old Dominion played good defense, but we have to find a way to close games out." A 6-0 run by the Lady Monarchs made it 43-38 with 9:44 remaining. A jumper by Haliena Snowden (Seton Keough) with seven minutes left ended the run and pushed the Tigers' lead back to seven. Old Dominion would score 13 of the next 15 points to turn a seven-point deficit into a four-point advantage, 51-47, with 2:55 to play. The Lady Monarchs then got four points from Jessica Canady in the final 1:30 to close the game on a 6-3 run. Jasmine Parker had a game-high 22 points for Old Dominion. Canady finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Baker-Brice added six assists and three steals in the loss, and Snowden had 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. Kandace Davis finished with a team-high nine rebounds as she surpassed 700 for her career.
Marist 63, Loyola 60: : Miriam McKenzie had a chance to tie the score for the visiting Greyhounds (9-10, 4-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) with seconds left, but her 3-point attempt fell short and the Red Foxes (16-4, 8-0) came away with the victory. McKenzie (Oakland Mills) had 20 points and six assists, both game highs. She added eight rebounds. Loyola's Erica DiClemente tied her career-high with 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Boston University men 79, UMBC 61: : Chris De La Rosa scored 18 points, but the host Retrievers fell to the Terriers. John Holland had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead Boston University. Jake O'Brien added 18 points as the Terriers (11-9, 6-2 America East) won for the sixth time in seven games by defeating UMBC for the second time this season. The Terriers beat the Retrievers, 75-63, on Jan. 12. Boston University took a 30-19 lead on Carlos Strong's 3-pointer with 2:54 left in the first half. Strong hit another 3 for a 35-23 advantage with 1:18 remaining. Holland made a 3-pointer to push the lead to 40-23 with 19:45 to play in the game. Holland was 5-for-6 on 3-point attempts to help the Terriers shoot 47.8 percent from beyond the arc (11-for-23). Strong finished with 13 points and Corey Lowe added 10 for Boston University. Chauncey Gilliam (Hammond) added 10 for UMBC (1-19, 0-7).

Ex-Terp Mouton has big game as GreenHawks top Quebec
Jamaal Wise hit a 3-pointer as time expired, lifting the Maryland GreenHawks of the Premier Basketball League to a 125-124 win over the Quebec Kebs on Saturday in Rockville. Harvey Thomas had 31 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and two blocks, and former Maryland standout Byron Mouton added 28 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the GreenHawks. Scooter Sherrill contributed 28 points and 12 assists. The GreenHawks led by 23 points in the first half. "It was a very good win," coach Otis Hailey said, "but there is still a lot to work on." The Kebs cut the GreenHawks' lead to 88-86 in the third quarter behind 24 second-half points from Charles Fortier, who finished with a game-high 39.
Elsewhere: : The Maryland Marvels of the American Basketball Association dropped both games of a doubleheader to the New York Red Riders in Laurel. The Marvels fell, 127-125, in overtime Saturday and lost, 121-119, on Sunday.
