Will Barton chosen to play in Nike Hoop Summit

Former Lake Clifton player Will Barton, now playing at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, was named one of the first nine members of the USA Junior National Select team that will play a World Select team in the Nike Hoop Summit on April 10 in Portland, Ore. Barton, a 6-foot-6 guard who has committed to Memphis, led the Lakers to a 28-0 season and the Class 3A state championship in 2009, earning All-Metro Player of the Year honors.

NBA: : Sacramento Kings small forward Donte Greene (Towson Catholic), who is averaging 8.7 points, will start tonight in Atlanta, taking the spot previously held by rookie Omri Casspi.

Minor league: : The Maryland GreenHawks (1-4) of the Premier Basketball League relieved coach Rob Spon of his duties and replaced him with Otis Hailey.

Towson football season begins Sept. 2 at Indiana

Towson released its 2010 schedule, which includes a Sept. 2 season opener at Indiana. It's the third straight season the Tigers will open their season against an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision team, having faced Navy in 2008 and Northwestern last season. With the Football Championship Subdivision Colonial Athletic Association now a 10-team league, each school will play eight league games. Because Northeastern and Hofstra discontinued their football programs, the CAA eliminated divisional play for 2010. Each CAA school will play all but one CAA opponent. The Tigers will not play William & Mary in 2010.

Men's basketball: : Loyola freshman guard Robert Olson was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference co-Rookie of the Week after averaging 11.3 points over three games.

Women's basketball: : Rider freshman center Caitlin Bopp (Institute of Notre Dame) was named MAAC Rookie of the Week.

Baseball: : Towson was picked to finish tied for seventh in the CAA in a vote of the league's head coaches. James Madison is the favorite.

Swimming: : Loyola freshman Brennan Morris of Lutherville and sophomore Courtney Trivino were named the men's and women's Swimmers of the Week by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. ... Towson junior Meredith Budner was named the CAA women's co-Swimmer of the Week.

Gymnastics: : Maryland junior Abigail Adams and freshman Ally Krikorian were voted the East Atlantic Gymnastic League's Gymnast of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Indoor track and field: : Maryland sophomore high jumper Dwight Barbiasz was named Atlantic Coast Conference men's Performer of the Week. ... Navy freshman high jumper Kristin Smith was named Patriot League Athletic Rookie of the Week.

Wrestling: : Maryland senior Hudson Taylor was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week.

Baysox raffle to benefit earthquake victims in Haiti

The Double-A Bowie Baysox announced a raffle to benefit the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. The team is partnering with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to raffle a pair of 2010 season tickets, and 100 percent of every dollar raised will support UNICEF's relief efforts for children in Haiti. Fans can go to baysox.com to purchase raffle tickets. Each ticket costs $10, and fans can purchase as many tickets as they want until the raffle closes at 5 p.m. Jan. 29. The winner will receive a pair of lower reserved seat tickets for all 71 Baysox 2010 home games.

Nationals, Willingham agree at $4.6 million for 2010

Outfielder Josh Willingham agreed to a $4.6 million contract for 2010 with the Washington Nationals, who also avoided salary arbitration with three other players. Catchers Jesus Flores and Wil Nieves and right-hander Jason Bergmann agreed to one-year deals with Washington on Tuesday, the day players and teams submitted figures for arbitration. Flores and Bergmann got salaries of $750,000; Nieves agreed to a $700,000 deal.

Redskins: : Guard Chad Rinehart was arrested Monday on public intoxication charges in Iowa after he pulled on a locked door at a pizza restaurant in Des Moines, Iowa .

Capitals: : Left wing Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL's First Star of the Week after he led all scorers with 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and helped Washington (30-12-6) move into first place in the Eastern Conference by winning three of its four games.
