Phelps, Hoff win 400 IM gold at Southern California GP
Michael Phelps, who lives in Fells Point, and Katie Hoff of Towson won gold medals Sunday night at the Southern California Grand Prix in Long Beach. Phelps held off Japan's Hidemasa Sano in the 400-yard individual medley to take home his second gold of the meet. Phelps finished in 3 minutes, 38.42 seconds; Sano's time was 3:39.63. Hoff won the 400IM in a meet-record-4:04.39, edging Ariana Kukors (4:06.04). Hoff was second in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:44.48; Dana Vollmer of Granbury, Texas, won in 1:43.29, and Elizabeth Pelton of Ruxton was third in 1:45.52.
7-6 loss to La RaZa drops Blast into tie for first place
Genoni Martinez scored the game-winning 3-pointer at 8:37 of the fourth quarter, lifting Monterrey La RaZa over the visiting Blast, 7-6, Sunday night. The loss dropped the Blast (5-4) into a tie for first place in the Major Indoor Soccer League with the Rockford Rampage, which swept the Milwaukee Wave, 10-7 on Saturday and 7-6 on Sunday. Denison Cabral gave the Blast a 4-0 lead by scoring at 9:15 of the first quarter and 11:26 of the second, but La RaZa tied it in the third period on goals 15 seconds apart by Hector Vallejo and Mark Ughy. After Martinez's game-winner, the Blast pulled to within 7-6 at 13:28 on a sixth-attacker goal by Giuliano Celenza. The Blast, which played without Machel Millwood and Scott Buete, who stayed in Baltimore with injuries, will be at Milwaukee Saturday before facing the Wave at home on Jan. 30.

Loyola shoots 15.4 percent in 2nd half, falls to Saint Peter's
Saint Peter's (10-8, 5-3) held Loyola (9-9, 2-6) to four second-half field goals on 4-for-26 from the field and Nick Leon scored half his game-high 20 points during an 18-1 run to start the second half as the Peacocks earned a 48-43 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference home win.
WOMEN: : Georgia State placed three players in double figures en route to a 71-62 win over visiting Towson in Colonial Athletic Association play. Haliena Snowden scored 17 points for the Tigers, one short of her career high. For Georgia State, Danyiell McKeller scored 26 points, Jylisa Williams contributed 15 and Crystal Johnson had 13.

Ex-Oriole Tejada travels to Haiti to help quake victims
Free-agent shortstop Miguel Tejada has traveled to Haiti to help the victims of last week's devastating earthquake. Tejada, a six-time All-Star and former Oriole, arranged for a van full of food, water and medicine to be taken to Port-au-Prince on Sunday, and the Dominican Republic native took a helicopter to the Haitian capital. An estimated 100,000 or more people have died in Tuesday's magnitude-7.0 quake.
Pro basketball: : The Maryland GreenHawks (1-4) lost their home opener, 124-114, to the Buffalo Stampede in a Premier Basketball League game Saturday night at Wootton High School.in Rockville. Scooter Sherrill led Maryland with 29 points, D errick Mercer added 22 and Henry Thomas had 17.
