With candidates already filing to run for the seven-member Howard County Board of Education, several current members whose terms are ending are contemplating their future on the panel.
The seats of four board members, Sandra French, Pat Gordon, Frank Aquino and Larry Cohen, are on the ballot this year.
French, who is entering her 16th year on the board, plans to seek re-election.
"I definitely enjoy the job," said French, who has completed two six-year terms and is finishing up a four-year term. "I enjoy serving the people, and I enjoy working with a wonderful superintendent and staff. It just warms your heart to see all the wonderful programs going on in our schools and to see our students achieving."
Gordon, who has served on the board for the past 10 years, said she will not seek re-election after her term ends.
"I've had a great run," she said. "And I hope I've added something to the running of the Board of Education. But I think it is time to step aside."
Gordon said she made the decision last year.
"It will be tough," she said. "I've formed some very, very good relationships. The superintendent has been wonderful to work with, along with his associates. Everyone is dedicated and works hard. I've formed some very good contacts. But I think it is time for me to go."
Aquino, the most recent past chairman of the board, and Cohen have yet to announce their intentions.
"I'll be making some sort of an announcement at an appropriate time," said Aquino, who is in his fourth year on the board. "I'm coming off two years as chair of the board. I am trying to catch my breath a little bit."
Cohen is also contemplating whether to seek re-election.
"It's something I'm going to have to discuss with my family," said Cohen, who has been on the board for four years.
Larry Walker, a parent who has been active in the school system for decades, and David Proudfoot, an administrator in Baltimore County schools, have both filed required paperwork with the Howard County Board of Elections stating their intention to run for the board.
Candidates have until July 6 to file. A primary will be held Sept. 14; the general election is Nov. 2.
